Mikko Hirvonen has extended his lead over Deane Buist by a further 26.2 seconds in the 29 kilometer Berwick 1. Buist managed a second fastest time, 36.4 seconds quicker than a charging John Silcock. Silcock bested Jeff Judd through the forestry test by 20.5 seconds, reducing the deficit to third to just 23.3 seconds. With nearly four minutes between second and third, a further minute between fourth and the battle for fifth place, the battle for third may prove to be the closest fight of the day in the Classics.
