Dunedin's Tom Bond has set the early pace in Waipori Gorge. Starting the day placed second by over a minute, Bond has slashed the deficit over the short 12.97km test, trumping overnight leader Tim Smith by 13.9 seconds. Fourth placed James Macdonald has come through with the second quickest time, 5.9 seconds off the pace, but has a long day ahead if he hopes to return to the podium. Third placed Paul Cross - whom Macdonald trumped in SS9 by 4.6 seconds, still holds a handy 1:41.2 buffer over Macdonald.
