So the county has been out with the plows and the deep snow on Stage 2 is now just snow. It's enough to make you wish you had snow tires but will it be there on Friday? And, since most of the rest of the Friday stages are dirt, what to do??? And, yes, most of the rest of the Friday stages are dirt. Of course, wet dirt is sometimes called mud and sometimes called slime and both of those types of dirt exist along with hard packed gravel and deep, loose sand. Now the Saturday stages are much more consistent, with the vast majority of the stages being hard packed dirt with some mud and slime. The exception is Old State, which is a ribbon of ice from one end to the other. I would bet, however, that the ice softens up and starts to break up and melt away by Saturday, particularly with the warm (for Michigan in February) weather predicted and 2 recce passes. But, then again, maybe not! And speaking of recce, on Stage 2, as things stand today, AWD will be mandatory. If we get a good melt over the next couple of days that will hopefully get relaxed but if you only have a 2WD vehicles you should start working on a backup plan.
